Discussion:
[chromium-discuss] A question about autoplay sound

Hi there,

Roger from Google Help Chrome Forums has forwarded me onto developer
forums to see if I can get a solution to my problem.
So my fingers are crossed in advance :-)

My Name is Gaylea and I am currently doing some volunteer work for a
charity that teaches people how to meditate (for free).

They have lots of free meditations they want me to arrange in a membership
area and I am putting together approx. 200 free meditations.

I started building the membership areas on Revolution slider with the audio
file attached streaming from Amazon S3 and recently noticed that the sliders
stopped playing the sound.

This completely crashes our idea and hope of being able to give people a
meditation experience.

Our pages are behind a membership site, people voluntarily log in for the
experience....

The slides will autoplay but not the sound !!!
(our developer recently advised us that this is google's latest update for
chrome browser!!!)

I have put months and months of effort building each meditation experience
- i was wondering if there was some kind of code or some
kind of other workaround for this on the backend?

I would prefer not to have to plaster the slides themselves with BIG ugly
writing - because that also destroys the ambiance.

To see our problem please visit this link

https://members.thebrahmakumaris.org.au/meditate-now/just-a-minute-meditation/concentration/creating-focus/

Would appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Many thanks in advance.

The user just has to interact (click/tap) with the page once in order to
enable sound, as far as I know. Does that not work?

Hiya PhistucK,

Thanks for answering.

Yes of course its true that they have to click/tap now... they never used
to need to before... I am trying to get the auto happen back
(and it did used to auto happen and now does NOT due to the latest Chrome
update...)

People go from a page where they can choose which meditation commentary
they want to listen to, and the they go directly to
THE page where they CAN listen to it. but it doesn't auto happen anymore.

The average person does not scroll down enough to even know they have a
button to press to hear sound
(let alone refresh the page and then hit the button so that you can hear
this meditation in sync with the slides!!!).

The meditation commentary is wildly out of sync by the time the average joe
figures it out and it spoils
the "meditation experience".

PLUS it used to be an automatic experience and now its not.

I am trying to avoid plastering the slide with a big "hit the play button"
simply because that doesn't work across all responsive devices or look good
either (you wont see my sign of smaller devices).

Aside from the fact that it kills the "meditation experience" ambiance

Any code or work around would be appreciated.

Look forward to hearing back

I do not think there is a work around.
However, I think the browser is supposed to "learn" after a few times (a
few times the user clicked on play or similar) that the user engages with
the media on that page/website and let the page autoplay without a user
interaction (not sure, read this for details
<https://developers.google.com/web/updates/2017/09/autoplay-policy-changes>
).

(Personally, I think you are a bit exaggerating regarding the click
requirement killing the experience... You can find a way to make the user
click "calmly" and make sure it is visible on smaller devices, this is a
design issue that can quite surely be resolved)

Hi there PhistucK,
I have had a look at the developer page on this issue and thank you for
sharing this.

We were using an optimize press app for our audio player - is there a
different player you might know of that would work better with google
chrome?

I understand that you may not see the need for us having an autoplay
feature - as you have indicated.

However, we have a project called "The Sanctuary" *and in this project we
work with people who have experienced EXTREME TRAUMA*
such as rape, having their house burnt down, having their children killed
in car accidents, surviving a tsunami or another major event... *and the
like.*

*SO WE DO ACTUALLY HAVE A NEED for having this autoplay.*

*Traumatized people are very rarely able to function like a normal person -
at any level for a long time.*
And we do not expect them to.

We are just trying to help people by delivering the best we can - with the
minimum amount of having to navigate a web page.

Does that make sense to you?

Not everyone is computer literate

*The web page itself is meant to be a sanctuary* *so we are trying to have
as much peaceful ambiance as possible.*

We would appreciate any help you might be able to give us as well.

My fingers are crossed.

I did not try to imply you do not have a need, but it seems to me
(personally) that it is more like a nice to have than a requirement. I
understand you disagree and that is fine. :)
Also, since I guess the user clicks/taps on something in order to get to
that page, you can start playing on the "previous" page (a single page
application) instead when they click/tap. I realize this probably requires
a re-architecture of your application - I am just noting another
possibility.

I do not know this "optimize press app" and I also do not know other
players that are compatible with the new autoplay restrictions (I am simply
not in that business, so my knowledge is limited here).
